The Beatles was een popgroep uit Liverpool bestaande uit Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison en Ringo Starr. De groep was actief van 1962 tot 1970 en wordt nu nog steeds beschouwd als de invloedrijkste band uit de geschiedenis van de popmuziek.[1] Al vrij snel na hun doorbraak kregen de leden van The Beatles te maken met hysterische reacties van voornamelijk jonge tienermeisjes, die tijdens concerten de muziek met hun gegil overstemden. Voor dit gedrag raakte de term "Beatlemania" in zwang. Tijdens hun carrière verrichtten ze pionierswerk in de geluidsstudio, waarvoor ze in brede kring lof oogstten. Onder hun invloed groeide de popmuziek uit van een op Amerikaanse rhythm and blues gebaseerd genre tot een veel breder georiënteerde muzieksoort.

The Beatles: Remastered in Stereo

On 9 September 2009, The Beatles' entire back catalogue was reissued following an extensive digital remastering process that lasted four years.[196] Stereo editions of all twelve original UK studio albums, along with Magical Mystery Tour and a combined two-CD set of Past Masters, were released on compact disc both individually and as a box set. A second collection included all mono tracks.[197] The digital remasters replaced the 1987 CD masters.[198][199] Prior to the release date, Mojo magazine's Mat Snow was invited to hear ten remastered tracks from the 1968 album The Beatles and stated that they were "better even than we'd hoped."[200] The stereo versions were treated with gentle peak limiting, to keep the overall volume of each track consistent with that of the other tracks, but not to make the tracks louder. The mono versions, collected on The Beatles in Mono, were not treated with peak limiting.[201] For a limited time after the release date, a brief documentary was included on each CD album.[202]
